Why are these toys sometimes called “Grocery Store

Toys”?

Today, toys are sold year round.  In the 50’s and 60’s toys were primarily sold near Christmas.  Deluxe toys were originally only sold before Christmas in grocery stores ($1.00 down and $1.00 per week). Sample toys in exciting display boxes (see photo) were placed in the space above the coolers which was unused in most grocery stores.  The toys were then delivered from the factory to the grocery store in time for Christmas.  Once Topper Toys came along, they were sold in all types of stores, all year round.

What kind of car is the Crusader 101?

It is not designed to be any particular car, but bears a striking resemblance to the 1963 Pontiac Bonneville.  These are also some elements of the Lincoln Continental and other cars used in the interior and rear.  The most notable thing about Crusader 101 is the size, almost 3 feet long, and the amount of detail in the styling, dashboard, and interior.

What kind of car is the Playmobile?

It is not designed to be any particular car, but bears a strong resemblance to the dashboard of the 1963 Ford Galaxie 500.  Note the: • Linear speedometer with rounded gauges at each end. • Steering wheel with Horn Ring. • Top dashboard pad design I actually think that the Playmobile with the full chrome treatment is more attractive.
